Narrator says: rotates at 18 rpm and “that’s not nearly fast enough to generate electricity” Perhaps the government should tell Enercon, Northern Power and GE about this. They all make large wind turbines that have no gearbox. The fact is you can build a wind turbine with a low torque, high speed generator, or a high torque, low speed generator, both are commercially viable with the latter gaining on the former.

@lukeseti – why do you say “directly” – trying to create a straw-man? Solar energy was converted to chemical energy by plants and became part of the biomass that became oil. Unless you believe oil’s source is abiotic in whole or in part, the biomass source is 100% from he sun.

There isn’t that much energy in wind and what there is is not all captured. How much energy does it take to MAKE one of these turbines? What is the break even point? What is the lifespan and maintenance? 9,000 homes when the wind blows? LOL! Not impressed.

@rw5791 The economy was fucked before Obama was elected. Granted he hasn’t been able to fix the economy. I didn’t vote for him and I won’t vote for him in 2012 either but your ignorance needs to be called out. Wind can create more jobs per dollar than any other type of energy. Energy efficiency, I.E. making better windows, insulation, cars, etc. is both profitable and creates many jobs.
