Analog Layout Synthesis

Integrated circuits are fundamental electronic components in biomedical, automotive and many other technical systems. A small, yet crucial part of a chip consists of analog circuitry. This part is still in large part designed by hand and therefore represents not only a bottleneck in the design flow, but also a permanent source of design errors responsible for re-designs, costly in terms of wasted test chips and in terms of lost time-to-market. Layout design is the step of the analog Click to continue

9 HELPFUL QUESTIONS ABOUT WIND CHIMES

1.  What are Wind Chimes?
Wind Chimes are an arrangement of loosely attached pieces, whether small or large, of various types of material and shapes, that are suspended and situated so as to move with the wind, thus producing a desired sound.  The pieces may be anything from shells, to wood, to bamboo, to metal (of some sort), to glass, to pottery, to old used silverware, tools, CD discs, or whatever.  Some are designed to be more musical, such as bells, bamboo tubes, or metal tubes or rods, where the pitch can be more precisely controlled.  Others produce sound in a more haphazard way, such as glass pieces, or shells.

2.  How long have wind chimes been around?
-  Wind chimes have been found at archeological sites in Southeast Asia c. 3000 B.C..
-  In the Mediterranean region, the Egyptians were casting bronze bells by 2000 B.C..
-  China began casting bells by 1100 Click to continue

Cat Generator Sets: How Renewable Landfill Energy Works

Posted on

Modern landfills are required to install gas collection systems to capture and destroy the methane gasses that are naturally produced within a landfill. These gases are burned in a flare. Rather than eliminating landfill gas by simply burning it off, Caterpillar can help you turn it into a renewable fuel by providing gas-fueled engine-generators that can produce electric power from landfill gas. Video case study: Tiree wind turbine

Posted on

When the small Inner Hebridean island of Tiree voted in favour of the establishment of a renewable energy project in the form of a wind turbine, the Co-operative Bank's Renewables Team stepped forward with a sizeable loan. This is a short video on how the island's 740-strong community is benefiting from the presence of a 55-metre turbine that is now providing all their electricity.

Wind Energy Jobs

Posted on

An interesting study from the American Wind Energy Association shows that jobs in the wind industry increased seventy (70) percent last year. With 35,000 new jobs created in 2008, the wind industry now employs more people than the coal industry. For clean energy advocates, this is a huge milestone-but can it be sustained? Will wind energy continue to blossom and create more job opportunities?

First, we should examine how this boom came to pass in the first place. For one, wind energy is quickly becoming a popular idea. It's one of the most rapidly expanding sources of energy in both the U.S. and Europe. In fact, out of all of the new electricity generation installed in the U.S. last year, wind energy made up 42 percent. This figure was no doubt due to the fact that there was a fifty percent increase in installed wind capacity, with enough megawatts coming online to power two million homes. Another key factor to the jump in jobs in the industry is the fact that in 24 states, Click to continue

Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm

The 317MW Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm, located about 23 km off the coast of North Norfolk, UK, will comprise 88 wind turbines and generate around 1.1TWh per annum. This is enough clean energy to power almost 220000 homes. Compared to fossil fuels that is a reduction of 500000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. The project is now in its construction phase and will be fully-operational by the end of 2011. The wind farm is owned equally by Statoil and Statkraft through joint-venture company Scira Offshore Energy Limited. Statoil is Click to continue

Winding Up of a Small Business

Posted on

The term business winding up is one which encompasses both a creditors voluntary liquidation and also a compulsory winding up. The creditors voluntary liquidation is by far the most used corporate insolvency procedure. It is initiated by the directors, who advise the shareholders (in a small company) usually the same people, that the company is insolvent and that there is no chance of saving the company and that it needs to be closed down.

The creditors at a meeting are advised of the financial state of the company and asked to vote to place it into liquidation. The creditors are allowed to question the directors at the meeting as to the reasons for failure of the business. Sometimes this can be distressing for a director especially when the creditors are persistent in their questioning, but more often than not, creditors do not even attend in person at the meeting and instead vote by proxy to liquidate the company.

A Professional should advise directors who seek Click to continue
